Iizaka Onsen

It is believed that this hot spring was discovered by Yamato Takeru, a Japanese legendary prince. It is a historic hot spring where poet Matsuo Basho and his traveling companion Kawai Sora spent a night during the trip that produced "Oku no Hosomichi" (The Narrow Road to the Deep North) in 1689. The phrase “Iizaka of the East and Beppu of the West” came to be used, referencing the famous hot spring resort area Beppu in western Japan. High-rise ryokan (Japanese-style inns) are located along both sides of the Surikami River. There are nine public baths amongst the side streets of the hot spring area. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll while onsen-hopping, going from one hot spring location to the next.
